Why commercial auto insurance matters

Collisions, theft, and injuries can stop deliveries, cancel appointments, and cut revenue. A well‑built policy protects your balance sheet, satisfies lender and contract requirements, and gets vehicles back on the road quickly.

Core coverages (Ontario)

Third‑Party Liability

Helps protect you if your vehicle causes injury or property damage to others. Many businesses select $2M or higher; higher limits available via umbrella/excess.

Accident Benefits

Provides statutory benefits to insured persons injured in an automobile accident, regardless of fault (medical/rehab, income replacement, etc.). Optional increases are available.

Uninsured Automobile

Protects against injury/damage caused by an uninsured or unidentified driver (hit‑and‑run), subject to limits.

Direct Compensation - Property Damage (DCPD)

Covers damage to your vehicle and loss of use when another at‑fault party is insured in Ontario, to the extent you're not at fault.

Physical damage (your vehicles)

  • Collision / Upset: your vehicle hits another object or rolls over.
  • Comprehensive: theft, vandalism, fire, glass, falling objects, some weather.
  • Specified Perils: named risks (e.g., fire, theft, lightning, explosion). Lower cost, narrower coverage.
  • Loss of Use: rental/transportation while a covered claim is repaired.
  • Waiver of Depreciation / Replacement cost (where eligible): for newer vehicles subject to terms and time limits.

Endorsements & helpful add‑ons

Family Protection / Underinsured Motorist

Helps protect you and your passengers if the at‑fault driver has too little insurance.

Drive Other Vehicle (for executives/owners)

Extends certain coverages when driving non‑owned vehicles for personal use (subject to eligibility and wording).

Leased/financed vehicles & loss payees

We'll add the finance company or lessor as required and align physical damage terms to the agreement.

Trailers & interchanged trailers

Add coverage for owned and certain non‑owned trailers you use in your operations; confirm liability and PD responsibilities in contracts.

Cargo, tools & equipment (companion policies)

Auto policies typically do not cover what you carry. Add Motor Truck Cargo for goods hauled and a Tools & Equipment Floater for your gear.

Hired & Non‑Owned Auto (HNOA)

Many businesses rent vehicles or have employees use their own cars for errands or deliveries.

  • Non‑Owned Auto Liability: protects the business if it is held liable for accidents involving employees' personal vehicles used on company business (often placed on the CGL).
  • Hired Auto: liability when you rent/lease short‑term; you can also add physical damage for the rented unit via your policy or purchase from the rental agency.
  • Damage to Hired/Non‑Owned autos: available by endorsement/companion coverage; terms vary by insurer.

We'll coordinate auto and liability policies so there are no gaps when staff drive vehicles you don't own.

  • Driver programs: MVR screening, distracted‑driving policy, remedial training after incidents.
  • Maintenance: PM schedules, brake/tire checks, DVIRs; keep logs for underwriters.
  • Security: immobilizers, GPS tracking, locked yards; remove keys and secure catalytic converters.

Underwriting checklist - what affects price

  • Vehicle types, ages, values, and GVWR

FAQs

Are tools or inventory in my van covered by auto insurance?

Usually not. Add a Tools & Equipment floater and, if hauling goods for others, a Cargo policy.

We sometimes rent vehicles-should we buy the rental agency's insurance?

It depends. Your policy can often extend liability to hired vehicles and add physical damage by endorsement. We'll compare costs and gaps with the rental desk coverage.

Can employees take vehicles home?

Many fleets allow it with rules (no personal hauling, secure parking). Tell us where units are kept overnight; it affects theft exposure and rating.

Do we need an umbrella policy?

If contracts, cargo, or passenger exposure are significant, an Umbrella/Excess policy can increase limits over both auto and CGL at a reasonable cost.
