Collision Reporting Centres

Had a minor collision? In many Ontario municipalities, you'll report at a Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) instead of waiting for police at the scene. This page explains when to go, what to bring, and what happens next.

What is a Collision Reporting Centre?

A CRC is a police-affiliated facility that helps drivers report motor vehicle collisions that do not require police attendance at the scene. Staff document the incident, photograph vehicle damage, and file a report you can use for your insurance claim.

When should I go to a CRC?

In many Ontario municipalities (e.g., GTA, Halton, Peel), drivers involved in minor collisions typically report at a CRC, especially when:

  • No one is injured and no immediate hazards exist at the scene.
  • Total apparent damage is around $5,000 or more (thresholds/requirements vary by municipality).
  • The collision occurs on a public roadway and vehicles are drivable (or can be safely towed).
  • A hit and run occurred (you'll still report at a CRC if police do not attend).
  • The collision happened on private property and local policy directs you to a CRC.

Note: Always follow directions from police dispatch/non-emergency lines-local practices differ.

When will police attend the scene?

Police typically attend when one or more of the following apply:

  • Injury or possible injury/fatality.
  • Suspected criminal activity (e.g., impaired driving, stolen vehicle, assault).
  • Involvement of government/municipal vehicles or vehicles transporting dangerous goods.
  • Uninsured/suspended drivers or a driver who refuses to provide information.
  • Significant damage to public infrastructure (signals, guardrails, municipal property).

If you're unsure, call the non-emergency police line for guidance.

What to do before you go

  1. Move to safety. If it's safe, move vehicles out of traffic. Turn on hazard lights.
  2. Exchange information. Names, addresses, phone numbers, driver's licences, licence plates, insurance details (insurer & policy #), and vehicle info.
  3. Document the scene. Take photos/video of positions, damage, road conditions, and landmarks before vehicles are moved (if safe).
  4. Witnesses. Collect names and contact info.
  5. Call police (non-emergency) if needed. They'll advise if you should proceed to a CRC or wait.

What to bring

  • Driver's licence
  • Vehicle ownership/permit
  • Insurance "pink slip" (proof of insurance)
  • Photos/video you took at the scene
  • Names/contact info for other parties and any witnesses
  • Towing invoice and storage location (if towed)

Towing & storage

  • Confirm rates before hook-up and get a receipt. Note where the vehicle is taken.
  • In many areas, towed vehicles must go directly to a CRC unless police direct otherwise.
  • After reporting, your insurer/adjuster will provide instructions on moving the vehicle to an approved facility or storage.

What happens at the CRC

  1. Intake: Staff confirm identities, documents, and details of the collision.
  2. Damage documentation: Vehicle damage is photographed; you'll complete a collision report.
  3. Report number: You'll receive paperwork/occurrence details for your records and insurer.
  4. Next steps: You may receive guidance on towing/storage and instructions for notifying your insurer.

Fees

There is typically no fee to file a collision report at a CRC; operating costs are generally supported by Ontario insurers. Standard towing/storage fees still apply where relevant. Keep all receipts for your claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to go to a CRC right away?
Report as soon as practical-many centres request you attend within 24 hours of the collision. If your vehicle is towed, it may go directly to a CRC.
What if the other driver refuses to share information?
Note their licence plate, vehicle make/model, and any details you can safely obtain. Proceed to a CRC or call the non-emergency police line for instructions.
Can I file my insurance claim at the CRC?
CRC staff file the collision report and take photos. You'll still need to notify your insurer or broker to open a claim.
My car isn't drivable-what should I do?
Arrange a tow. Confirm the rate and destination. In many areas, the vehicle must be towed to a CRC first; after reporting, your insurer will direct next steps.
Do I need a police report for every collision?
Not always. Municipal practices vary. For minor collisions without injuries, a CRC report is often sufficient. When in doubt, call the non-emergency line.
